Director of Public Health, NHS North Essex Mike Gogarty, Director of Public Health

Mike has nearly 20 year’s experience in senior public health posts in Essex and, prior to this, was a GP in Clacton.  He is a joint appointment with Essex County Council.  Mike has been involved in the development of a range of key services over the years including involvement with the Cancer Centre at Southend and the Cardiac Centre at Basildon.  His team was recently awarded “Highly Commended” in the HSJ Commissioning Organisation of the Year Award. He has lived in Tendring for many years.

The Public Health Directorate works in partnership with statutory and non-statutory agencies to improve the health of the local community by looking at the broad determinants of health.  This directorate has responsibility for immunisation and health promotion, including services to stop smoking, sexual health, drugs, alcohol and physical activity.  It's concerned with improving the health of the population rather than treating the diseases of individual patients.
