Clinical Governance is a framework through which NHS organisations are accountable for continuously improving the quality of their services and safeguarding high standards of care by creating an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish.
Clinical governance is a whole system approach involving all levels of a healthcare organisation, from 'Ward to Board'. Everyone in the organisation has a role to play in ensuring that the health services we provide are of the highest standards of safety and continually improving in quality. A healthcare service of good quality is defined by Professor Lord Darzi as safe (the primary aim is to do no harm to our patients), effective (patients benefit from treatments) and delivers a good experience for patients.
